Consistency

Consistency “conformity in the application of something” . I’ve been told that consistency in one’s work is a hallmark of artistry. Allowing viewers to immediately recognize the works as mine at a glance.

Maintaining this is the difficult part for me as my work is a constant evolution of ideas, albeit within a range of techniques and appearance.

How do you maintain consistency in the wake of ideas arriving at lightspeed during the process.

My thoughts are these:

  1. Develope a train of thought or techniques that carry through a series of images and allow you to focus on completing the series.

  2. Keep track of various ideas in a journal for reference. Ironically mine is titled “ideas” on the cover!

  3. Give yourself some freedom in modifying processes midway but not to the detriment of finishing a piece. For some of us a piece is never “finished” leading to indecisiveness and frustration.

  4. Changes may be made continually. Think of all the over paints imaging has revealed in Old Masters works however, even they reached a point where it was “done”
